This for me should be in its own book category, fantasy-lite perhaps? The Water Witch is fantastical, has good world building, mystical characters, lore, but it is all done quite simply - and I mean that as a complement! This was easy and fun to read, with great storytelling and a quick pace. All of the characters were interesting, I think the villains (maybe a bit too villainous?) and the story ties up very tidy at the end, perhaps too quickly which would be my only criticism. Otherwise this is a great read! Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for the free ARC. All opinions are my own. The Water Witch is available everywhere August 5th, 2022.
ARC Review: Love in 3D by Marie Harte
I really liked reading this. It felt like a very spicy, sexy slow burn romance with very little other plot going on. There was some character development both of Xavier and of Justine, some cute found family moments and regular family dynamics as well. My only issue is that some of the “drama” or tension fell flat for me, and I’m not sure why. Even the supposed “conflict” between Xavier and Justine is resolved very quickly, without any fanfare. But on the other hand it read like a spicy palette cleanser and I had a good time reading it. Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity for my honest review. Love in 3D published August 18th, 2022.
ARC Review: Her Final Confession by Lisa Regan
This is another in the Detective Josie Quinn series and another great one. I personally think reading the previous books gives you some great insight into Josie’s past and why she behaves the way she does, but the author does a good job of looping in past storylines into the present as to not get confused. I continue to love Noah, and the unique relationship that continues to grow between him and Josie. There are lots of moving parts and the book flies by with pleasure. Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity. Her Final Confession published on September 6th, 2022.
Book Review: Gilt by Jamie Brenner
Jamie Brenner has written another really wonderful family drama. The novel focuses on the the sisters of the Pavlin family jewelry empire, and one of their daughters. It has some slight mystery, some romance, lots of sisterly drama and wonderful descriptions of New York City, Provincetown and jewelry. The author does a wonderful job of weaving past and present together, with multiple storylines intertwining together. I really enjoyed the writing for this reason especially; it is a dynamic type of story with lots going on but everything clearly coming together. Brenner does a great job of weaving in flashbacks. Those glimpses move the story forward and get you to really know and understand our main characters, without taking you away from the present moment. I also enjoyed the jewelry discussions! I loved hearing about the different advertising campaigns. All the main characters were somehow likeable while also being flawed, making them quite real. The ending for me came together almost too tidy but it was a great read overall. This is a great book to pick up for a summer read - light while still being deep, drama without too much dramatics. Recommend! Thank you to Putnam Books and NetGalley for the free ARC in exchange for my honest review. Gilt comes out on June 21st, 2022.
ARC Review: His Lessons on Love
Cathy Maxwell hits another solid home run for me with her newest release His Lessons on Love. This book is the third in her series The Logical Man’s Guide to Dangerous Women and it releases January 25th, 2022. I have not read the first two books in the series, however this book can be read as a standalone. I will be going back and reading the others! A quick thank you to NetGalley and Avon and Harper Voyager for a free e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I don’t know if I’ve ever read a historical romance with a baby present right out of the gate, but baby Dora is such a sweet, happy presence throughout the book. I love how Maxwell describes her facial expressions and her temperament, it added a lovely depth to the story. The conflict between our characters is a bit enemies to lovers, but it flows pretty naturally. It was a lovely romance overall.
Both our hero and heroine, Mars and Clarissa, are instantly lovable from the get-go. Their relationship builds slowly and sweetly, and I came to love Mars even more as the book went on. There are some gentle twists and turns and the plot unfolds quickly, making it a quick and engaging read. I did take issue with the general treatment of Dora’s biological mother by Maxwell – I personally do not enjoy when authors use such black and white “bad” behavior when describing a character, and wish there was some more nuance or respect shown for this character. However overall, the side cast was lovely and a nice addition to the story. Overall, totally enjoyed and will continue to read whatever Cathy Maxwell writes!
ARC Review: Highland Wolf
Highland Wolf is part of the long-running Highland Brides series written by Lynsay Sands, which I have read a few of in the past. Our heroine Claray is being forced to marry an awful man – until she is saved by our hero, the Wolf. I liked the setting, the overall writing style, the cast of characters woven into the book. The story was fast paced, but perhaps too much so. There is very little tension or build up between our hero and heroine and its pretty much 0-60. At first I found Claray’s interest in saving animals cute and endearing – it went with her very sweet nature and showed her caring nature. However over time and all the animals, it got a bit repetitive I also felt that overall, the conflict/villain was a bit over the top and a bit silly. Overall it was a quick read and It was a pleasurable 3 star read. I enjoy Lynsay Sands’ writing and will always read more of her work but this was just okay for me this time. Thank you to NetGalley and Avon and Harper Voyager for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review. Highland Wolf by Lynsay Sands releases tomorrow 1/25/2022! |
ARC Review: Lease on Love
I always love reading a debut novel! Lease on Love is written by Fallon Ballard and is set to publish February 1st, 2022. As always, my thoughts and opinions are my own, and I received an eARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
Quick rundown: Sadie is reinventing herself after she’s passed over for a promotion at work, and finds herself living with her new hunky (who she refuses to see as hunky) landlord Jack who is a bit mysterious and a bit nerdy, slow-burn romance and some self-growth ensues!
I liked the meet-cute, the slow-burn, the beautiful NYC backdrop, and all the dreamy real estate talk. The book had good bones and I think a lot of people will enjoy it and find it relatable. There is some depth beyond the romance and some self discovery, which is great.
For me, it read much more as a new adult romance, even though the characters were supposed to be a bit older than that. There was a level of immaturity, and “drama” that felt very well, young. I found Sadie to be quite insufferable, and everything came quite easily to her. I found the idea that she just randomly decides to start a floral business in NYC and everything just falls into place just a bit too easy.
I will add a ME problem, not a BOOK problem, but our characters are drinking alcohol pretty much at every interaction. Someone is always grabbing a beer or pouring a wine or meeting for drinks. I think I’m getting old, because this type of lifestyle for me just screams college-just-turned-21-vibes and not late-twenties-finding-myself vibes.
I also felt that in the romance, the conflict that ends up coming to a head was not really anything…conflicting? But in my opinion Jack and Sadie did have issues that weren’t really addressed (money, power disparity, maturity, lifestyles).
This all may sound pretty harsh, but I actually did enjoy the book overall and found it entertaining. I would pick up Ballard’s next book when it comes out! I think a younger, “hipper” demographic would really enjoy this!
Magic Dark, Magic Divine ARC Review
This last week I read Magic Dark, Magic Divine by A.J. Locke, a free ARC provided to me by Entangled Publishing through NetGalley. I was beyond impressed with this first installment in the series, and I’ll give it away now: I really liked this book! As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own!
Quick rundown: bad-ass heroine, lots of magic, a swoon-worthy love interest, great friends and an engaging plot. We have Pennrae, our karate instructor slash secret magic-wielding female lead. She had been asleep for 300 years, a punishment handed down when magic was still alive and well. Now, magic is gone, and Pennrae is living a quiet life as a karate-instructor, until mysterious deaths start happening and everything seems to unravel. In the mix is Callan, her gets-under-her-skin rival instructor whom she swears she hates…until the sparks fly.
I love the diversity of characters, with both our hero and heroine as well as many of the side characters being POC. The story is face paced, with lots of great magical elements mixed in. I liked that we are introduced to all the magic and the world-building piece by piece through examples and plot lines. I do think you could feel that this was the first in a series as there was a lot more explanation and preparation for further books but I was still engaged throughout. I’ll definitely pick up the other books in the series and look forward to reading more from A.J. Locke.
Magic Dark, Magic Divine releases November 15th, 2021! #magicdarkmagicdivine #Entangledpublishing #NetGalley
A Bedtime Full of Stories Review (Spoiler Alert: Your kid needs this one!)
We already own several of the back-list from this series, and when I saw this one pop-up on NetGalley I was so grateful to get a free ARC to review! As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own. We have read A Year Full of Stories and A World Full of Animal Stories and have loved them both. This book follows in their footsteps, and I’ve already ordered a hard-copy to have by my six-year-old’s bedside! The format is 1-3 pages per story, each from a different area of the world.
What is so lovely about this book is the depth of the stories, while also keeping them on the short side, which is ideal at bedtime! My son and I both love that the folktales are from all around the world, and it opens the door to greater discussions and education. As homeschoolers, this fits in really great into our kindergarten curriculum, Torchlight, which focus is on getting familiar with the countries of the world. I look forward to continuing to pick out stories to fit in with our weekly educational activities. Additionally, the illustrations are really wonderful as well!
This book is a great addition to your bedtime routine with your kiddos, home education or not!
